I am twice as miffed as usual tonight. I was happy. I have a lovely spool of ethernet cable graciously provided by Baldgit to test my connection with by running from the router all the way down 3 flights of stairs to the basement. Run the cable, connect to laptop, run speedtest at 10:30pm Monday night. 600 down / 230 up. What? Surely you jest, run speedtest again. Same results. Verify by going upstairs to run speedtest on the PC and get the same results - OK point taken. I'll be on the phone to Cox tomorrow - I refuse to pay for this shit that I'm getting.

I figured what the hell, I'll give it a go anyway and plug the cable into my xbox. Doesn't recognise that a cable is attached. Wot? Must be loose. Jiggle cable, restart everything (inc router) and try again. No cable. Do what now? Who with the what where when? Plug back into laptop. Works like a charm.

Baldgit's probably in bed so I'll quiz him if it's some weird super special cable tomorrow. Isn't a cable a fucking cable any more? Am I still me? In fact, who's eating this chicken?

I give up. I'm taking up backgammon or something. Fuck it.

Hm- the xbox doesn't like the cable? that's bizarre. Too much latency? (after all, it's like 120 feet long)

I have a cable tester that i'll drop off at your place to verify the integrity of the cable (Geeks R Us!) to make sure the cable isn't flawed.

did you run the same bandwitdh tests on a shorter cable to make sure that my glorious spool isn't causing you some issues?
