The beautiful game

I'm encouraged by more than a few of my American friends really warming up to the World Cup this year around. This is for them, thanks to the O-bomb for some of the links. The first is probably the finest free kick I have ever seen, by a certain Mr Roberto Carlos against France. David Beckham could stand to learn a few things from this guy. Amazing.

The second is an old / new look at the twice FIFA player of the year, Ronaldinho. The amount of tech footwork on the ball is sickening. More than anything else, he's always smiling while he's playing the game. Beautiful to watch.

Third, for pure showmanship you can't beat a nice bicycle kick. However, none executed more finely than this one from Marco Van Basten in Ajax. Quality striker, quality goal.

Fourth one is probably close to O-bomb's heart as it concerns a certain Zidane. Eye on the ball, youngsters, and.. wait for it.. wait for it... SMACK.

Finally, though I hate to admit it and as much as I hate the fuck, probably the best individual goal I have ever seen scored was by Diego Maradona who took the ball deep in his own half and tore the England side a new one. Simply breathtaking.

Let's not forget while we're on the World Stage that the English Premier League is also not too shabby when it comes to fancy fancy goals..

Yes my friend! You and a few of your cronies have talked me in to sitting down and enjoying a few 'fotty' games the past few weekends! I have to admit, I never knew what I was missing! Really enjoying it so far! Great group of vid's there as well!

Amazing collection. This year has certainly enlightened me to the sport and given me more exposure. I heard it put best by Wilbon yesterday that if we in the US can embrace 1-0 Baseball games and drivers turning left, then we should leave soccer alone and not criticize it as a boring sport. Well put.

Did... did you say.. BORING? Football? We're talking about football here right? The one you play with a ball and kick? Just checking. Honestly I don't know how anyone with a smidge of passion could find this sport boring. It might be the lack of a local team I suppose? Hard to get your teeth into abstract teams you can't identify with.

Fun stuff, yo! I like after the bicycle kick one how the announcer says "every football enthusiast around the world enjoys seeing this one". Just the way he says it is funny.

I think the best goal of the lot is the one in the english compilation where that guy stops short in front of the goalie and then lobs it over him and it slowly bounces into the goal. THAT is some impressive shit if you ask me. Kicking it hard is for pussies.

Nice collection... Although this one didn't score a goal, I think it's impressive none-the-less ;)

Wow, that's some incredible talent! Fun to watch while I'm stuck in the office missing the live games.
